WHY IS EXERCISE IN YOUNG CHILDREN SO IMPORTANT?

Research has shown that childhood obesity is becoming a huge problem, and the rapid increase in obesity in England has even been described as ‘epidemic’.* It is currently considered that some children are unlikely to outlive their parents due to obesity and are more likely to die though health related problems as they grow older.

Health promotion is one of the core standards of the NSF (National Service Framework for children, young people and maternity services). The importance or prevention and early intervention is recognised, and the aim is to enable children to make informed choices about healthy lifestyles, thus empowering them to improve their own health.

On average a school child watches nearly three hours of television a day, but 16% of children watch at least five hours!

The Health Education Authority recommends that children should try to participate in moderate activity one hour every day, and at least twice a week an activity to improve bone health, muscle strength and flexibility which is where Tan'Gun Tigers come in. Activities such as this can provide an amazing boost to a childs confidence, well being and provided added health benefits. Martial Arts for all ages has been proven to give the following health benefits:

1) Maintenance of energy balance (in order to encourage a health weight)
2) Avoidance of risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as high blood pressure
3) Opportunities for social interaction, achievement and mental well being
